Spread the word! The Farmers B.A.G is looking for minority farmers based in the North Carolina area to participate in our farm school.

If you are a minority farmer interested in farming, obtaining a growing contract, and learning how to run a scalable agribusiness this program may be perfect program to help you obtain these goals. You'll also gain experience with grant writing in addition to obtaining a farm number.

The Farmers B.A.G. is honored to have attended the 18th Annual Minority Farmers and Landowners Conference, where we witnessed two special individuals be inducted into the North Carolina Heritage Black Agriculture Hall of Fame - Tim Pigford and Antoine Austin.⁣

Tim Pigford was recognized for his political advocacy. He is the only black farmer to successfully win a lawsuit for black farmers and received funds for them.⁣

Antoine Austin, the Assistant Dean of the College of Agriculture at A&T, was also recognized for building the leading program for agriculture in the nation.⁣
⁣
Congratulations to Mr. Pigford and Antoine Austin. We are truly inspired by your advocacy and commitment to the field of agriculture.

Happy Farmers Market Week! This week is all about supporting local farmers and the fresh produce that nourishes our community.

In support of Farmers Market Week, we encourage you to stop by the @theblackfarmersmarketnc upcoming markets on August 11 (Durham) and August 18 (Raleigh) to purchase fresh fruits and veggies. We have started on a journey to understand good soil health! Thanks to @americanfarmlandtrust and Mrs. Elzadia Washington, we are learning how to identify healthy soil and how to help farmers achieve it! A big thank you to Dr. Chasity Warren-English, an amazing professor in the college of agriculture at the illustrious North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University for inviting The Farmers B.A.G to participate in the North Carolina Farm Bureau 2024 IFAL Conference!

IFAL is a unique, week-long leadership development program designed for rising high school seniors interested in agricultural careers. Throughout the conference, students explored a variety of career opportunities and emerging technologies. They engaged in leadership development course, visited schools of agriculture and agribusinesses, toured research farms and laboratories, attended leadership development classes, and explored the General Assembly and North Carolina Farm Bureau offices.

Shout out to fellow Aggie and bestie of our Co-CEO Brielle Wright, Waynette Kimball, for being a co-presenter and putting in work for this next generation! We are so grateful to have been part of such an enriching experience!

Thank you to @dave_street22 at @feedingamerica as well as Mariah and Sarah at the @foodbankcenc for inviting The Farmers B.A.G. to participate in a conversation about equity for underserved farmers and creating access to resources for these farmers through The Farmers B.A.G. Farm School.

Recently, you may have seen our series of trailblazing women. To continue our women's empowerment efforts, this month we're highlighting future leaders to look out for.

Meet Kayla Braggs, a self-proclaimed “accidental agriculturalist.” The Atlanta, Georgia native, graduated from Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU) with a degree in Food Science and a minor in Agribusiness, Summa Cum Laude. Currently, she is a second-year master’s student at Michigan State University studying Food and Ag Economics.

Kayla’s studies focus on the intersectionality between producer and consumer decision-making impacts on domestic supply chain sustainability for small and medium scale farmers, while also looking at how federal agricultural policy plays a role in this area of agribusiness.

She has participated in research grant projects with the National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA), served as an Agriculture Scholar with the Farm Foundation, spoken at a joint Diversity Equity and Inclusion Conference in Marrekech, Morrocco, and served as a DEI Representative for the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources (CANR).

Kayla is an active member and national leader of Minorities in Agriculture, Natural Resources and Related Sciences (MANRRS). Her biggest accomplishment thus far has been piloting MANRRS Pipeline Mentorship Program, now the basis for the society-wide MANRRS LEAD Mentorship Program, sponsored by Smithfield Foods.

Post-graduation, Kayla plans to pursue her PhD in Public Policy, focusing on producer-centered agriculture policy. Her ultimate goal is to become the youngest Secretary of Agriculture for the United States to not only make the world more sustainable, but more equitable for all farmers, ranchers and producers.

On behalf of The Farmers B.A.G., thank you Kayla for your contributions to agriculture. We can't wait to see all that you accomplish post-graduation.

As we close out Women’s History Month, The Farmers B.A.G. would like to spotlight trailblazing and trendsetting women in agriculture. These women serve in various roles and offer diverse skills to their organizations and community.

Please join us as we give flowers to DeMarquine' (Dee Mar Kwi Nae) Houston, Director of IT & Compliance at The National Peanut Board (NPB).

Dee has worked at The National Peanut Board (NPB) for nearly 22 years. In her current role, she has the pleasure of combining her love of technology, curiosity about all things science and commitment to championing inclusivity into a job that is challenging but fun.

While she didn’t intentionally seek a career in agriculture, she can’t imagine working in any other industry.

“It’s been my experience that agriculture is business forward and massive in scope – just about anything you’re interested in doing you can do for a company or organization focused on agriculture - while also being deeply connected to humanitarianism and stewardship. I’m grateful to work in an industry that, at its core, embodies values that are important to me,” says Dee.

Amidst the pandemic's challenges, Dr. Fielding embarked on a mission to combat food shortages and foster community resilience through farming. Her farm provides a sacred space for gathering, knowledge sharing, and healing, embodying the spirit of ancestral wisdom and communal nourishment.

She cultivates a diverse array of crops native to Africa, each offering exceptional nutritional benefits - Okra, Bitterleaf, Amaranth, Njama Njama, Peppers and a versatile range of vegetables, rich in dietary fiber, minerals, folate, and vitamins A, B, C, E and K, and folate.

At her Farm-to-Table events, she incorporates these nutrient-dense crops to delight the palate and promote overall health and well-being within her community.

On behalf of the Farmers B.A.G., thank you Dr. Fielding for your dedication to feeding both body and soul.

feed every day. Without the support of America’s farmers who protect our country’s, feeding everyone would be a difficult task.

In honor of Ag Day, today, May 19, please join us in thanking all farmers and Ag families for their dedication and stewardship.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) developed “Standards for the Growing, Harvesting, Packing, and Holding of Produce for Human Consumption” known as the Produce Safety Rule. The rule sets forth procedures, processes and practices that minimize the risks for consumers of eating raw fruit and vegetables that could be contaminated with bacteria, viruses or parasitic organisms that cause foodborne illness.

In an effort to educate farmers, The Produce Safety Program within the North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services is offering three workshops in collaboration with North Carolina State University, North Carolina State Extension, and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

This workshop can only accommodate a limited number of attendees so be sure to register now. Registration for each workshop will close once the 30 person registration limit is reached, or 2 days before the workshop date. Register using the links below:

Young farmers need equitable #LandAccessNow. That is why The Farmers B.A.G. joined @youngfarmers Land Advocacy Fellowship.

As participants in the fellowship, we hope to gain new practices and resources to help young farmers establish successful careers in agriculture.

Want to help advocate for equitable #landaccess? Join us in calling on Congress to support the 2023 #FarmBill, which advocates for equitable land access for young and BIPOC farmers. We also encourage you to like, share and repost on content to help spread awareness about the initiatives we are supporting.

Remember, todays actions not only impact farmers but our community as a whole.

Happy #throwbackthursday! In honor of the first Thursday of the new year, we're taking a stroll down memory lane and reminiscing on one of our favorite youth events from 2023.

Last summer, young men between the ages of 11 and 16, traveled with us to Washington, D.C. to participate in an Advocacy Summit. Our group had the opportunity to meet with members of Congress and share their thoughts on the upcoming farm bill.
